I am trying to revise a script and when I try to save and quit I get the message "unable to save changes, macro maybe running". I cannot complete the changes and I am at a loss as what is going on.

This can happen when you run a macro and have to forcibly "break" (ie, stop) it from running, or it's actually still really running while you're in the editor and try to save. One of the quickest ways to "free" it is by just exit'ing Macro Scheduler, and opening it up again.
If you have the edit window open, and don't want to lose your changes... just copy the whole (new) script to notepad or something, quit the editor without saving, exit/reload msched, then go back in to the script editor and paste back and it should let you save.
