Posting Images to the forums

Post by gdyvig » Thu May 21, 2009 3:33 am

This started out as a post on OCR, but I was unable to post the images I wanted to talk about. So I renamed this post. The OCR discussion to a new thread.

To post an image:

- Put the image on a web site that is accessible by the world.

- Paste in to the post editor the web address of the image, for example
http://www.mjtnet.com/images/logotype.png

- Highlight the image location text and press the "Img" button located at the top right of the post editor.

I've substituted curley braces for braces so this line will display properly

{img}http://www.mjtnet.com/images/logotype.png{/img}

To post an image and make it a clickable hyperlink:

- Follow the three steps above.

- Highlight the image location text including the img tags and press the "Url" button located to the right of the "Img" button.

- In the first Url tag add an equal sign "=" followed by the text of the hyperlink
For example:

{url=http://www.mjtnet.com}{img}http://www.mjtnet.com/images/logotype.png{/img}{/url}

Only links to images can be inserted?

Hi Dick,

I can't place images on the MJTNET site, so I can only link to external sites?

If I can't paste copies into the post as I hoped, I need to post them to stable site where the images will always be available.

Yes you can only link to a webhosted image. How you do that depends on how long you want the image to be available, for forums like this one I generally use tinypic, those pictures stay around long enough for most purposes and you maintain anonymity. For the forum where I am a moderator and serious participant I use my own webserver. You can also sign up with a web image hosting service.

Learning about website creation is fun and a useful skill, you can get a free (but those usually have serious limitations) or very inexpensive account (like $10/year for the hosting and $9/year for your own domain name) webhosting account and it's well worth it to gain an understanding of the technology.

That is correct.

Also correct. If you don't have a server under your direct control then I would recommend either posting to Microsoft's http://skydrive.live.com/ or to Google's https://www.blogger.com/start

Other image posting sites have been mentioned and used on this forum in the past but most of them delete images after some period of time so the posts become less readable. I'm guessing Google and Microsoft will be around for a while.
