RSS information.

Post by Bob Hansen » Thu Mar 18, 2004 11:21 pm

I just noticed a reference to RSS in the Forum header. Probably been there for months and I never noticed it? I am curious about the experiences of anyone who has been using this. Recommendations/comparisons of readers? Advantages of using vs. the browser?

Hi,

It was added only yesterday, so you haven't been missing it.

A very good reader is FeedReader at http://www.feedreader.com - it is free.

Benefits are that it will sit in your system tray and (while you are online) will automatically download new posts and alert you to the fact that they are there. No need to keep checking the site. It is also a great way of keeping up to date on important announcements. Use your reader to get other newsletters and articles at the same time.

Email is becoming increasingly unreliable. We have already stopped announcing minor updates by email, except for one or two exceptions, and now only use email for major updates, but even this is hugely problematic. We now post all updates on the forum and RSS is the best way of getting these updates quickly.

RSS is being seen as a replacement for email newsletters etc as it is entirely opt-in (depends on the user actually grabbing the feed) and not affected by spam checkers et al. We're looking at ways of using RSS for our announcements more - either by encouraging more users to start using RSS readers or perhaps by having Macro Scheduler itself check the update feed and present the announcement to the user. RSS is becoming more and more popular anyway, so eventually it may just automatically replace email for content delivery.

Submitting a test note to the forum to test RSS response.

Please do not add any additional replies for at least 30 minutes to this subject so that I may remove this posting when test is complete.

Tests are done. RSS is working. Very happy with FeedReader as recommended by support.

If this works as well as it appears, I will have to ask about implementation on other forums that I monitor. Beats using browser to check for updates.

Thanks to those who held off posting here for the past half hour.

Cannot delete earlier messages in this forum. Will edit out content......
