Rewards for generosity with Reputation Points

Post by gdyvig » Thu Jul 02, 2009 1:18 pm

Marcus just announced the June results but reported this problem:
All of these have won in previous months this year. No other takers. So what do we do? Skip a month?
Your reputation points increase has you solve problems and decreases as you seek answers or offend someone. So a low reputation score does not necessarily mean you are any less regarded - you are simply generous in granting points to those who help you.

So, perhaps recognition should be given to those who seek answers and graciously recognize the help received in the forums.

Right which is why my system looks at how many points you were rewarded *in the previous month* not in *total* so the figures I showed are those rewarded that month. So even though you may have less points in total than someone else if you were rewarded 5 last month but the other person was given none, you'd still get the prize. And if you give any it will not make a difference to how many you were awarded. So even if Gale gave 100 last month he'd still have received his 90 and been at the top of the list. I hope this is clear. We're looking at only points *given per month* here.

But, sure, we could reward givers too. I'll set up the queries for that. I guess that would encourage people to give points and then there'd be more people winning points.

My only concern with this is that it becomes very easy to game the system. Anyone wanting a free T-Shirt just needs to give a heap of points to someone and could do so randomly. It may also make people give more away than necessary and end up with people having no points left to give. You might see that so-and-so left 50 points so decide to give 90, and we end up with a race to zero.

At least the way things stand the system is most fair IMO and correctly rewards those that have been helpful. It's hard to game it currently. But just getting something for dropping a load of points is harder to police.

Maybe it should be left up to our discretion - perhaps myself and the forum moderators could choose someone they think deserving.
