nah i did make sure to save as .xlsm (the messagebox worked fine). if it works fine for you and not for me maybe you're right about the add-in. or settings issue. anyway sounds like something i need to figure out on my side unless any future releases after v10.1.20 could've addressed something like ...

okay, my problem doesn't appear to be related to which version of Excel created the file. i replicated the file except in 2007, and i get the same results. using macro scheduler, if i open it using excel 2003 it opens and closes fine. if i open from windows explorer it also opens and closes fine. ho...

Ah, I guess I did not test for that case...only when the file was there and updated, and when the file was there but not updated. Guess it does disappear for a short time while it's being re-generated. Thanks a lot for the insight...I will make those changes and see if that takes care of the problem!
