Windows 8?

Post by Marcus Tettmar » Wed Oct 24, 2012 7:53 am

So has anyone ordered a Windows 8 machine yet?

Or installed Windows 8 on their desktop?

If you're in the market for a Windows 8 tablet (or is it slate?) and wants to run Macro Scheduler on it you'll need Windows 8 Pro, not RT.

First to post a picture of Macro Scheduler running on their Windows 8 device gets a gearhead T-Shirt ... :-)

Would post image if I could, can't believe no one has. I only have MS v12 and lets just say MS not very happy when run on Win8. For now, I am about to virtualise it and see how that goes, but I don't think compiled macros run on it from what I have seen, my dialogs crack the sh!ts.

I rarely use IE -- only when a website doesn't work right in other browsers. But I give props to MS for their clever IE 12 commercial.

Well, I was kinda intending and hoping that someone would post a picture the week of launch not several months later when everyone's already using it ;-)

But, I'm a man of my word and you are the first. So PM me your shipping address and size and I'll get a T-Shirt sent to you.

How about something a little more unusual. Here's Macro Scheduler 14 running on Windows 8 running in VirtualBox on Ubuntu Linux:

Anyone else got some unusual config to share?

That's pretty cool. I had Ubuntu Linux installed on Windows 7 but never took the time to explore it.

I needed ubuntu because we had an old Maxtor NAS device which gave up the ghost. I was pretty sure the disks inside were ok. They were raid-1. I took the thing apart and took the disks out and put one in a USB enclosure but Windows couldn't read it. Some research confirmed that the NAS used a Linux kernel. I tried the Windows ext3 file system drivers but the raid partition was still invisible. I ended up installing Ubuntu and then was able to mount the drive with no problem. Sure enough the data was fine and it was left overnight to copy everything over to a new NAS device.

The machine I used to install Ubuntu was originally our Win 8 test machine. Initially I tried installing Ubuntu alongside Win8 but then Win8 wouldn't boot (something to do with UEFI/Secure Boot - be warned if you ever consider trying it). Lucky it was just a test machine that didn't matter. Anyway rather than put things back how they were I figured we might as well keep the Ubuntu machine "just in case" and since Win8 and Ubuntu don't seem to coexist in a multi-boot configuration I thought I'd try installing Win 8 into VirtualBox on Ubuntu instead.

See, there's a reason for this madness.
