I've never used Win 8 or 8.1, so I have little to go on. From what you wrote, it sounds like there are many benefits that outweigh the interface limitations.

Never understood why Microsoft released Win 8 for desktops. It's clearly meant for tablets. We use tablets and desktops/laptops very differently. You don't see Apple releasing iOS7 for Macbooks. iOS7 is for iPhones and iPads. Which is the right way to go.
