{"id":1112,"date":"2010-03-04T10:39:18","date_gmt":"2010-03-04T10:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mjtnet.com\/blog\/?p=1112"},"modified":"2010-03-04T10:41:38","modified_gmt":"2010-03-04T10:41:38","slug":"choose-your-web-browser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mjtnet.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/04\/choose-your-web-browser\/","title":{"rendered":"Choose Your Web Browser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my Windows XP systems installed an automatic update last night when I shut it down. \u00a0This morning I was presented with this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1111\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"Windows EU WebBrowser Choice\" src=\"\/\/www.mjtnet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/eu_webbrowser_choice-300x164.jpg\" alt=\"Windows EU WebBrowser Choice\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mjtnet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/eu_webbrowser_choice-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mjtnet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/eu_webbrowser_choice.JPG 801w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As I understand it this is as a result of an EU competition law decision. \u00a0 Is this a good thing or a bad thing?<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand it seems a waste of money and illogical.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m no fan of IE, but why shouldn&#8217;t Microsoft build a web browser and make it part of their operating system? \u00a0Should the EU force them to offer a choice of text editors, calculators, paint programs and calendar applications too? Where should it end?<\/p>\n<p>Plus, yet another dialog like this is surely going to confuse the ordinary user. \u00a0Many have no idea what a &#8220;web browser&#8221; is and just call it &#8220;My Internet&#8221; or &#8220;Google&#8221;. \u00a0The dialog preceding the one above has to go to the trouble of explaining what a web browser is. \u00a0And isn&#8217;t the user just going to take the first option anyway? \u00a0In which case should the EU force Microsoft to make IE8 something other than the default option?<\/p>\n<p>But then if I were trying to sell a web browser I guess I would welcome this decision.
