Program Compatibility Assistant issues with 11.1.20

Post by jpuziano » Fri Feb 19, 2010 5:49 am

Hi Marcus,

I saw Bob's issue with loss of RSS articles with the 11.1.20 MS install so I just installed 11.1.20 on the home Win 7 machine. RSS articles come up fine, however immediately as the install finished, something I've never seen before popped up called the Microsoft "Program Compatibility Assistant". Here's the text from what popped up:
Program Compatibility Assistant wrote:[Window Title]
Program Compatibility Assistant

[Main Instruction]
This program might not have installed correctly

[Reinstall using recommended settings] [This program installed correctly] [Cancel]

[Footer]
What settings are applied?
Then I clicked the "What settings are applied?" link at the bottom of that dialog... and another dialog full of stuff appeared, see below:

Program Compatibility Assistant: frequently asked questions

What is the Program Compatibility Assistant?
The Program Compatibility Assistant detects known compatibility issues in older programs. After you have run an older program in this version of Windows, it notifies you if there is a problem and offers to fix it the next time you run the program. If the compatibility issue is serious, the Program Compatibility Assistant might warn you or block the program from running. If that happens, you'll have the option to check online for possible solutions.

The Program Compatibility Assistant can detect problems with older programs.

What changes does it make?
It depends on the problem, but any changes made are related to how Windows runs the program. No changes are made to the program, itself. For example, the Program Compatibility Assistant can resolve conflicts with User Account Control, a security feature in Windows that can help make your computer safer. Or, it can run the program in a mode that simulates earlier versions of Windows. The changes that Program Compatibility Assistant makes are done automatically, so you don't need to make them.

Why do I see the Program Compatibility Assistant if the installation was successful?
The Program Compatibility Assistant might appear if a program or driver didn't register correctly in Programs and Features in Control Panel during installation. This can sometimes happen during the installation of a device. Click This program installed correctly to close the Program Compatibility Assistant.

How do I turn it off or turn it back on?
Adjustments to program compatibility features can be made by using Group Policy. For advanced information on how to use Group Policy, go to the Microsoft website for IT professionals.

Can I run it manually?
No. The Program Compatibility Assistant runs automatically when it detects an older program that has a compatibility problem. However, you can use the Program Compatibility troubleshooter, a separate but related feature of Windows, on a program or on a setup file if it won't work or install correctly. For more information, see Make older programs run in this version of Windowsž.

So after all that, I'm still not sure if there is a real problem... or not.

I had two choices (buttons) to click on the first dialog.

One said something like "This program installed correctly".

The other said "re-install program with recommened settings".

What recommended settings?

I clicked the first button "This program installed correctly" and will take my chances.

Marcus... do you know why this popped up in Win 7 after the install of 11.1.20?

This didn't happen when I installed 11.1.19 on Win 7... that installed fine with no complaining.

No ideas. I run Win7 Ultimate x64 and installed 11.1.20 public release yesterday and didn't see this message.

Furthermore, the installer has not been changed since .19. This was a minor update with only a small change to fix a memory leak. No changes to the installer.

Hi Marcus,

OK, thanks for the fast reply.

Everything seems to be working fine with Macro Scheduler version 11.1.20 on Windows 7 Professional so far... so I've not going to worry about this warning from Microsoft on the install. I'll just assume this is Win 7 trying to be overly helpful. And I'd bet Vista might do the same...

I do wonder what would have happened if I had clicked the other button "re-install program with recommened settings"... but no matter...

If anyone else sees the "Program Compatibility Assistant" popup after installing in Win 7, please post your experience... and perhaps we'll learn why this is happening or how to prevent it.

And if anyone knows more on this issue, please jump in.

Thanks and take care
